I work on different substrates, mostly paper, wood board and canvas. My work evolves through many layers. The first marks are loose and very gestural, they are usually made using pencil, pens, and watercolor crayons. I then respond to the first marks by using acrylic paint, typically starting with dark colors and then slowly adding in different vibrant colors. At the very end, I add a final layer of mark making, using paint pens and sometimes oil pastel. At many points in the process I scratch the top layers so that bottom ones reveal themselves. My work is intuitive and I just respond to the marks and shapes that occur within each layer, the process is very fluid and organic. Sometimes it remains abstract, and then other times, it becomes botanical, but I never start out knowing what the end result will be, so it’s always a surprise.
My colors are vibrant and through-out my body of work, it is the first thing that stands out. I believe it’s from having grown up in a hot, and vibrant country such as Venezuela. You can take the girl out of Venezuela, but never Venezuela out of the girl.
